Registrations for the 10th Olympus Marathon will open on Wednesday the 23rd of January, the day that Litochoro village celebrates its protector “St. Dionisios of Olympus”. This year’s Olympus Marathon celebrates not only its 10th edition, but also has the honor to be the opening event for the festivities of the 100 years celebration from the first climb to Olympus Mountain summit, Mitikas. Registrations will start on the 23rd of January and will close on the 15th of May, or when the 100 places given to foreign participants will be reached. Le 24 juin 2012 et pour la neuvième année consécutive Olympus Marathon a eu lieu avec succès a Olympe, "la montagne de Dieux". 517 athlètes, dont 85 venus de l'étranger, ont couru a cette montagne mythique en honorant avec leur présence la course malgré la situation difficile dans laquelle se trouve notre pays ces derniers temps.

Pendant le 9e Olympus Marathon la concurrence a été assez élevée, tant chez les hommes que chez les femmes, puisque les vainqueurs de l'année dernière ainsi que l'élite de la course de montagne grecque y ont participe. Pourtant, le temps chaud et humide pendant la journée du Marathon n'a pas permis a la plupart desparticipants de faire les meilleures performances possibles et les a fait souffrir. Le Catalan Michel Rabat aremporte la coursedans le tempsde 4.55.56 laissant amoins d'une minute son poursuivantDimitri Theodorakakos (4.56.46) comme c'était aussi le cas l'année dernière . A la 3e placea termineNikos Kalophyris (5.06.40), un coureur très apprécié par le public grec. Chez les femmes, l'Italienne Cecilia Mora (une grande protagoniste du MNRIC de cette année ) a remporte la victoire en 5.50.25. Elle a devance la vainqueur de l'année dernière, la Russe Zhanna Vokueva (5.55.52), tandis qu'a la 3e place a termine la première athlète grecque de la course, Amalia Matheou (6.46.49). Celle-ci, comme première athlète grecque d'Olympus Marathon, sera accueillie a Solukhumbu trail en novembre 2013. Parmi les 517 athlètes, 396 coureurs ont termine la course en 10 heures maximum puisque la température élevée a monte la performance moyenne a 8heures17min. Plus de 300 volontaires de la communauté locale ont aide a la réalisation de la course en offrant leur service. Samedi 23 juin, 275 enfants ont participe a la course pour enfants organisée par Olympus Kids et Olympus Junior dont 75 étaient des enfants des athlètes et des visiteurs. Cette course a été octroyé par le frondistirio "Korifi" a Litochoro. Le 9e Olympus Marathon a été cette année aussi organise sous l'égide de "DEADO" (Entreprise Municipale de Développement Diou Olympou). D'autres supporters du Marathon étaient aussi "Buff", "Era Energy", "Power Bar", "Nutrixxion", le restaurant "Gastrodromio En Olympo", "Epsa" et la boisson énergétique bio"MyE". La contribution de EOS de Litochoro, de Vrontou et de Karitsa ainsi que l'équipe du refuge A a été importante pour le nettoyage de sentiers de la course sans oublier l'aide des travailleurs de la Municipalité Diou Olympou au cours de la préparation du Marathon. A cette organisation ont aussi beaucoup aide volontairement avant et pendant la course les "Samarites", les "Sauveteurs" et les "Nageurs-Sauveteurs" de la Croix Rouge Grecque dont 40 personnes sont venus de Katerini et 18 de Salonique. 422 athletes (88%) completed the race within the 10 hour time limit, while 60 (12%) withdrew or could not meet the time requirements. Three great athletes, Sebastien Chaigneau, the Catalan Michel Rabat and the Greek Alexis Gounko left all others behind, even from the 10th kilometer and fought for victory until the last meters, finishing less 90 seconds apart. In the final standings after Chaigneau (4.47.34), Rabat finished second (4.48.21), and Gounko third (4.48.58). In the women category, Dissler΄s dominance was undeniable and she was never threatened. She finished easily first and 25th overall. Second woman was the Greek Natalia Papounidou (6.20.25), and third the Romanian Gianina Tanase (6.27.13).

Mount Olympus is the only mountain in Greece that retains snow in the early summer. OM athletes had the opportunity to cross the remaining snow fields in the highest part of the race, right below the high peaks of the mountain. Almost 300 enthusiastic volunteers supported the 7th Olympus marathon.

New regulations regarding athlete safety and fair play were applied this year. Great effort was given to reduce litter, non-recyclable materials and paint marks in the support stations and trails. In the parallel events, 2 small races, KIDS and JUNIOR Olympus Marathon, took place on Saturday evening, gathering more that 150 youngsters.

The OM organization extends its gratitude to all athletes, volunteers and friends of Olympus Marathon and announces the 8th edition of the race for June 26, 2011. Olympus Marathon started in 2004, as a modern, athletic reviving of the sacred pilgrimage to mount Olympus were ancient Greeks gave offerings and sacrifices to the 12 Olympic Gods and particularly to Zeus.

In contrast to the ISF World Series, the International Mountain Running Cup (MnRIC) has been set up according to the needs of athletes and organisers. This is why the series will consist of six races staggered from May to October, one race per month, all located in the Mediterranean basin, enabling participation in the entire series at a reasonable cost. To complete the series athletes must participate in at least three races and a maximum of four. Adding bonus points on the fifth and sixth races will favour the most faithful, veteran runners.

Freedom of choice will be another strong point of the series. Participation is not mandatory in any race and athletes can participate freely, freely choose which nation they want to represent, regardless of whether it has a state. Each race has its classifications of individual, team (whether clubs, commercial, or national teams) and by nation – the latter category has inspired the series’ subheading: Gran Prix of Nations. The races that form part of this series share organisational collaboration, toughness, beauty and height. In addition to the inaugural race of the Unesco Urdabai Biosphere Reserve, in Arratzu, the series will compete over the mythical Greek mountain of Olympus, the Sanctuary of Nuria in the Catalan Pyrenees, Ariege in the French Pyrenees, the maritime Alps with their 2500 m of positive gradient in Aosta, to finish in the heights of the Atlas in Toubkal, Morocco.

The series will distribute €12,000 in prize money. Its calendar is as follows:

After the application of this new regulation, each athlete is compelled to transport his own container of any type he/she thinks it serves him/her better (e.g. hydration bladders, plastic bottles, cups,etc.). The volunteers at the refreshment & catering stations will provide the necessary liquid volume that it corresponds in each athlete, but only at the athletes own container. Exception in the new regulation is the 1st station of the race, where recyclable paper cups will be offered . The application of this new regulation aims in the reduction of plastic material that is used globally in the race, after taking into consideration that every year more than 7000 disposable plastic cups are being spent, which are not recyclable. Moreover, the pollution threat that mountain Olympus (which is a highly sensitive and protected region) faces, will be reduced significantly. OLYMPUS MARATHON

En 2008 478 atletas de 18 países participaron en la carrera. 85% de ellos cruzó la línea de llegada dentro de las 10 horas de plazo. El español Jessed Hernández, terminó primero en 4:33:37, estableciendo un nuevo record en la carrera. En la categoría de mujeres, la francesa Corinne Favre, terminó en 5:29:57 y también estableció un nuevo récord.

Skai Olympus Marathon es una carrera anual, celebrada el último domingo de junio.Se lleva a cabo en Grecia, en el famoso Monte Olimpo, la montaña mítica de los dioses de la antigua Grecia. La carrera sigue los pasos de los antiguos peregrinos que ascendían cada verano a las altas cumbres, en honor de Zeus como Dios supremo.

El trayecto de la carrera es de 44 kilómetros, y el total de la diferencia de altitud es 3.170metros. La carrera comienza en el sitio arqueológico de Dion (Alti 3m). Atraviesa casi toda la cara oriental de la montaña, pasando justo por debajo de los picos más altos. La carrera termina en la ciudad de Litohoro (alt 250m) en las faldas del monte Olimpo. Los atletas tienen la oportunidad de vivir una experiencia única en una montaña única con inigualable belleza natural.

Skai Olympus Marathon esta organizado por "Marathonios Olympou" una organización sin fines de lucro destinada a fomentar la singularidad de la montaña. ES el primer parque nacional (1938) del país, fue declarada reserva de la biosfera por la UNESCO en 1982.

La financiación la proporciona principalmente la estación de televisión Skai y, en menor medida por la prefectura de Pieria y los municipios de Dion y Litohoro.

Le SKAI OLYMPUS MARATHON se fait chaque mois de juin en Grece au Mont Olympe, la montagne des dieux de la Grece ancienne. Le parcours de l'epreuve suit le chemin de la voie sacree des croyants de l'antiquite qui, chaque ete, escaladerent le mont vers le sommet honorant par leurs sacrifices et leurs offrandes le dieu Dias, leur dieu tout-puissant.

L'itineraire du SKAI OLYMPUS MARATHON est de 44 kms et couvre un denivele positif de 3170m. Le depart se fait au centre archeologique de Dion, se poursuivant a travers le mont entier pour finalement se terminer au village de Lithochoro, au pied du Mont Olympe. Les athletes ont la chance de concourrir dans un endroit d'une rare beaute du parc national de l'Olympe, mais en affrontant des sentiers tres difficiles.

Sportively the race was dominated, like previsions said, by the local runners. Fu Dorjee Sherpa, the "king of the cimes", was unbeatable on the high altitude stages and demonstrated a great shape on the hardest peaks of the route. Behind him we found Sonamgel Sherpa, who also won the Annapurna Mandala Trail this year. Third is the first european, Christophe Erceau who made a strong race to beat the third nepalese Noamg Sherpa. The runner of the Reunion island has built up a very regular race to resist in the high altitude stages. Early leader David Pasquio knowned some difficulties at the end to fadded to 5th but complete the race with courage. In the women division the victory was also uncontested; Yangdi Sherpa dominated strongly his compatriote Nigma Sherpa and Celine Goemans, who was unable to follow the nepalese over 4000m elevation. Second edition next year (2010), in October.
